Vigilant (Snow) logbook, 1793-1795.

The logbook of the snow Vigilant details two shipping voyages, Jan. 1793-June 1795. The first voyage was from Salem, Mass., to Saint Helena, Mauritius, Ostend, Belgium, and Kronshtadt, Russia. The second voyage, in which the Vigilant was rigged as a brig, was from New York to Cork, Ireland, and Cadiz, Spain. The ship's home port was Salem; the owner was possibly Simon Forrester; the masters were John Murphy and Richard Wheatland; the logbook keeper was Wheatland. The logbook includes mention of holidays on board; passenger traffic aboard this cargo ship; equipment and supplies, specifically provisions, aboard ship; shipboard occupations; and incidents of disorderly conduct among the merchant mariners on board. During its voyages, the Vigilant spoke the ships Commerce, Elise, Elizabeth, Fame, Henry (out of Salem), and Lidds (out of New York).
